I have long felt constrained on my Surf City Sentinel Facebook page which I have published since 2016.
There is never a dull moment here in Huntington Beach, California, since city hall fell under MAGA extremist majority control in 2022. Things have only gotten worse after the extremists seized total control in 2024.
I moved here in 1999, and after getting involved with the Bolsa Chica Land Trust in 2001 as an environmental activist, I evolved into a general community activist and government watchdog seeking to hold city hall accountable. I’ve seen A LOT in my quarter century here, and today the city is truly in the worst of times.
I have much to say about that, and am prone to very long Facebook posts and comments with structure and flow, crafted with pride. But the Facebook UI simply doesn’t do justice for that kind of writing.
So, here I am on Substack, where you will find my longer, deeper posts, now with rich media, and of course all of the receipts for holding city hall accountable. While my content will continue to be free for the public good, being on Substack will allow my loyal audience to show their appreciation with voluntary payments. Bear with me as I work out the kinks as a newbie Substack author.
My Facebook page will continue with the same content that you’ve either loved or hated for years. However, my long articles will now originate on Substack, and links to them will be posted to Facebook.
While the road ahead for Huntington Beach and the nation may be dark, never acquiesce. Surf City Sentinel will be a shining light in that darkness. Join me on this journey by subscribing now.
